Royal Society of Chemistry invited talk with an Athena Swan perspective

18th February 2019

Dr Alison Edwards was invited to give a talk on her Hydrogel research as part of the local Royal Society of Chemistry lectures series which is hosted by the University of Sunderland. It is attended by an audience ranging from undergraduate students to academics to members of the public.

“The science aspect of my talk focussed on the underlying principles of hydrogels in everyday life and homed in on their application for drug delivery and cell culture application. This then led into some of the more recent hydrogel research that we have been undertaking on our aromatic-carbohydrate amphiphilc hydrogels.”

Given her involvement in Athena Swan in the School, she used this opportunity to conclude her talk with a short presentation about Athena Swan and some of her own perspectives and reflections based on her career journey. This was very well received, the discussion included students who wanted to know more about the initiatives and much discussion with academic staff around the ‘imposter syndrome’.
