Jointly run by the universities of Greenwich and Kent, Medway School of Pharmacy is based at the institutions’ shared campus at Chatham Maritime. The School opened its doors to its first 80 students in 2004: today it has more than 550 undergraduate and 100 postgraduate students, and runs a range of programmes for healthcare professionals.

Yuri Ushkaryov joins the School from Imperial College London, where he has worked since 1993, becoming Professor of Molecular Neurobiology in 2008. A graduate from Moscow State University, Professor Ushkaryov worked and taught at the Shemyakin Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, within the Academy of Sciences, Moscow, and has also been Senior Research Associate at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, a leading medical school and biomedical research institution in the United States.

His previous roles include a five-year spell as President of the British (London) Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience between 2004 and 2009, and he has also been a recipient of two Wellcome Senior European Research Fellowships.

Janet Krska is currently Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Liverpool John Moores University, where she has worked since 2005. She is a registered pharmacist, has worked in both primary and secondary care and was Consultant in Pharmaceutical Public Health at NHS Grampian from 1997 to 1999. Her academic posts have included Head of the Pharmacy Practice Research Unit at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.

A Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, her research interests include medication review, patient experiences of using medicines and pharmacies, adverse drug reaction reporting by patients, and public health services provided by community pharmacies.

Professor Iain Cumming, Head of Medway School of Pharmacy, says his new recruits will further strengthen the School’s reputation for high quality, internationally recognised research and first-class teaching. “It is a real coup to have such leading academics as Yuri and Janet joining us here in Medway. They bring a wealth of experience and expertise, which will be of tremendous value to every student,” he says.

In the last three National Student Surveys, the School was ranked in the top 11 universities and HE colleges in the whole country, achieving overall satisfaction scores in excess of 90% from its students.
