Medway’s first MSc Medicines Management graduate
September 2009
Kathy Ellis, a master’s student studying for an MSc in Medicines Management was the first graduate from the programme and graduated in July 2009. The programme is designed to equip healthcare professionals with the skills and knowledge to contribute effectively to medicines management services and to individual drug therapy decisions.
Kathy said, “To complete my MSc Medicines Management degree, I was required to conduct research in an area relevant to my practice: I chose to explore the experiences of patients who had undergone insulin initiation in a general practice clinic. The prospect was challenging but exciting and once I started the process, I really enjoyed it. My supervisor facilitated my research and I was fortunate in having regular contact with her in the form of emails, telephone calls and face-to-face meetings. Importantly, I feel my study has made a small but valuable contribution to patient care. Following presentations of my findings to the insulin clinic clinicians, practice GPs, nurses and importantly the study participants, I developed some new leaflets, as part of the improvements identified, which are now being piloted. I aim to publish my research findings in a peer-reviewed diabetes journal.”
“I feel privileged to be the first Medway MSc Medicines Management graduate and the highlight was an award ceremony at the Rochester Cathedral in July 2009. Overall I enjoyed my research experience and I would encourage others to undertake the MSc Medicines Management degree programme at Medway.”
