BPSA Area Conference in Medway

Medway Pharmacy Students’ Association recently hosted its very first British Pharmaceutical Students’ Association area conference on Saturday 28th February in the Pilkington building at the Medway campus. The MPSA welcomed over 160 pharmacy students from all over the UK to this full day event.
The theme of the Medway conference was Infectious Diseases. Guest lecturers included Jonathan Mason, Helen Darracott, Naomi Fleming as well as Medway lecturers Dr Tim Paget and Jerome Durodie.
Mr Jonathon Mason is the National Clinical Director at the Department of Health for primary care settings and also the Chief Pharmacist in the city of Hackney. Mrs Helen Darracott, from the Proprietary Association of Great Britain (PAGB) which represents the manufacturers of over-the-counter medicines and food supplements in the United Kingdom, spoke about the switching of some medication from prescription only medicine to pharmacy only medicine. Mrs Naomi Fleming, an antibiotic Consultant Pharmacist who works with the PCT to discussed better antimicrobial policies in prescribing. Dr Tim Paget, a Medway School of Pharmacy microbiology lecturer, gave a very interesting lecture on STDs and water borne diseases. Mr Jerome Durodie, a clinical lecturer, gave a dynamic presentation about controversial issues surrounding hospital hygiene.
An interactive supplementary prescribing workshop followed, where students were given the opportunity to take part in pharmacy role play scenarios and problems solving workshops.
