Medway School of Pharmacy student Marjan Manoucherhri has beenawarded a £1000 annual scholarship, funded by Bexley councillor, Harry Persaud.
Marjan, 20, who is from Iran, is the first recipient of the Harry Persaud Scholarship, a new scheme to provide support to an international student of Pharmacy; she will receive £1000 a year for three years.
Now in her second year, Marjan is studying for the MPharm qualification. She says: “I am so grateful to Cllr Persaud for his kind gift. This scholarship will make an enormous difference to me, and help me pay my tuition fees” Marjan says that she would like to qualify as a professional pharmacist, working in a hospital, then she hopes to study for a PhD, undertaking research in microbiology. “Who knows, I may come back to the university as a lecturer one day!”
Cllr Harry Persaud made the gift to the University of Greenwich as he has long-standing links with the institution. His work in the field of education over three decades includes serving as a governor of Beths Grammar School in Bexley and as a trustee of Greenwich Community College. Cllr Persaud is also well-known in South London as the Director of Woolwich Travel Agency Ltd and for his work as a healthcare consultant and world cricket promoter.
He says: “I have spent 45 years of my life working in the health service and I wanted to help someone studying in this field. I was also interested in supporting a student from overseas as I know what a struggle it can be to fund an education in the UK.
“I am delighted that Marjan is to be the first Harry Persaud scholar. I know that she is very proud of her university and I am certain that she will make us very proud of her as she succeeds in her studies and in her future career.”
The Rt Hon Baroness Blackstone, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Greenwich, thanked Cllr Persaud, saying: “This is a thoughtful and generous donation which will have a lasting impact.”
Medway School of Pharmacy is run jointly by the universities of Kent and Greenwich and is based on the Universities at Medway Campus in Chatham Maritime.
