Pharmacy is not only a very demanding profession but it can also be very rewarding and pharmacists are among the major players in the health care arena. This is why we need to work together.

These are some interesting areas that require further investigation:

  • Pharmacy Practice in Europe: the European area is really fragmented, 23 different official languages and a population which is over 500 million so far. Pharmacists are working with different ICT (Information Communication Technology) systems, approaching the dispensing procedure in different ways and delivering different services according with their country of practice. The application of different dispensing methods and different ways to process prescription, from the paper based, to the more evolved electronic once, in order to generate electronic PMR (Patient Medication Record) require further investigation.
  • Development and application of new models in community pharmacy: moving from a static model, drug centric, where pharmacists are mainly involved in checking, to a dynamic model, patient centric, where pharmacists have a proactive role, dealing with clinical issues such as ADR, drug administration, injections, vaccination, drug information.
  • The financial burden must be address and in order to achieve this objective pharmacist need to be aware of the financial implication of their choices. The financial side of the pharmacy model is becoming a critical success factor that will dictate the survival or the end of pharmacy in the near future.
  • Creation and development of a platform in order to share information in real time among different countries: a new and crucial role for the profession is coming up. There is even more need to share information about patients in real time in order to provide better and tailored service. Information communication technology (ICT) and Pharmacists are a very powerful combination and they could make a real contribution to people’s lives.
  • Creation of a standardized European PMR (Patient Medication Record): there is the need to create a standardized PMR to facilitate people movement around Europe; at the same time to share information and reduce medication errors.
  • The development of research studies/projects targeted to acquire data which can be analysed by mean of multivariate statistical techniques will allow the development of a roadmap from where we are now to where we would like to be in the next 5 years.
